Fillings

Fillings at Twin Creeks Dental take about an hour depending on the size of the cavity. This gives Dr. Daniel time to take x-rays, discuss the procedure and then complete the filling.

Why do I need a filling to fix a dental cavity?

We tell patients tooth sensitivity can be due to a lot of things - but sometimes a dental cavity can be the main cause. A cavity is caused by bacteria creating a hole in the tooth causing decay-like matter to form. As it gets progressively deeper into the tooth, it can cause an infection, lead to inflammation, and ultimately dental pain.

Cavities are a common dental problem.

In fact, 92% of adults ages 20 - 64 will have at least a single tooth decay in their permanent teeth.

We recommend having Dr. Daniel remove the decay as soon as possible to prevent future problems like needing a root canal or tooth extraction.

What are the two common types of cavity fillings?

The fillings we use at Twin Creeks Dental help block bacteria from building up and even reinforce the strength of the tooth. Although our office in San Ramon uses composite resin fillings, we’ll explore the two common types below:

Composite Fillings

This is an esthetic option for patients because it matches teeth color. The glass or quartz filler makes it quite durable. Perfect option for small or medium parts of the mouth that perform moderate chewing.

Amalgam Fillings

This is the most traditional material used by dentists for more than a hundred years. These fillings are a combination of metal elements, making it the most affordable option. Some dentists believe these fillings are strong and ideal for filling cavities in the back of the mouth where chewing takes place.

We’ll be happy to discuss the pros and cons of each during your next dental appointment.

Do I need to visit a specialist for fillings?

Dental fillings are part of general dentistry and can be performed by Dr. Mabaet. We know teeth are important for overall good health and we’re one of the best dental offices in the San Ramon area for general dentistry. So if you need fillings then call our office for an appointment. We are glad to help. We also offer cosmetic dentistry so you can get the smile that you want.

Here are the five steps patients can expect during the appointment:

  • First, patients will remain fully awake as Dr. Mabaet uses a local anesthetic to numb the teeth and gums*.

  • Second, a drill will be used to remove decay from the affected tooth, leaving a hole.

  • Then the hole will be cleaned and prepared for the filling material.

  • Next, the tooth-colored filling gets inserted into the exact shape of the hole and formed to resemble the shape of the tooth.

  • Finally, it is cured in place with a bright light to harden the filling.

*Please note, that it’s common for the numbness to last a while after the appointment.

How much do fillings cost?

Whether you need a filling or another type of dental service, your cost will be unique. Factors that will influence the cost include but are not limited to: the location of the work needed, the materials used, and any insurance benefits you may have.

During your initial consultation, we’ll provide a cost estimate of the scope of work needed and the estimated costs. Contact our San Ramon office for more information.
